Social Media Resources
Having a clean and consistent online presence is important for any organization, and churches are no exception. Your online platform shows newcomers the kind of church you are. What ministries do you support? What is it like to sit in the pews? Online, potential members can see if they’re a good fit for the community you have built.
Your online presence is also a resource for your current parishioners. Everyone forgets service times sometimes or can’t remember if the Christmas pageant is at the 9:00 service or the 11:00. By keeping your online platform updated, you can better support the flock you’ve grown. Your online presence also connects to your legitimacy as an organization in our modern culture. If you apply for a grant or aid, they’ll look you up online to get a better sense of your church. If you have no asset page, no static page on the Diocesan website, it would be easy to reject you as an unserious candidate, or even worse as a scam. The Diocese of Nevada has developed a plan for each church, tailored to what we’ve found online and full of resources and options so no matter your bandwidth, you can have a strong online presence.
General Plan for Parish Social Media
Every parish should have an updated and fully fleshed out Asset Map page on the Episcopal Asset Map website. A good example of a well-maintained page is that of Trinity Cathedral.
They have:
A short introduction/biography
Worship times
Important contact information (clergy and parish)
Address (with a map)
Links to social media - Facebook/YouTube/EDNV website (everyone at least needs to have the EDNV website linked to their page)
{List of their current ministries} (optional but appreciated)
{A picture} (optional but appreciated)
The first 5 are non-negotiable and should be present on every church’s page and updated regularly as needed.
[If you need help updating your Asset Map page, the Diocese will provide someone to assist you and all you would need to do is provide the information for some to use to populate your page.]
After setting up an Asset Map page, the next step is to have a Facebook profile that is current and accessible. Each parish should follow these guidelines when utilizing a social media page. If needed here are some examples of Facebook post ideas.
If it is too much of a commitment to have a Facebook page or there is not someone who can maintain it, the next best option is to have a static page on the EDNV website. This can be made for the parish if all the information is provided.
Finally, if you feel comfortable keeping your Asset Map and Facebook page current and active, your parish may utilize a website. This website needs to be: easy to access and use, updated regularly, and maintained by your own parish.
